My twin sister Lauren has been my best friend for 25 years, 11 months and 3 days (P.S. We’re 25 years, 11 months and 3 days old FYI), and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t realise how lucky I am to go through life with my twin sister by my side. We lived together for the first 22 years of our lives, but now live quite a distance apart. It’s hard for us but being apart has been something we’ve just gotten used to over the last few years. Travelling together has been a dream of ours (that sadly always felt like it would remain a dream) for years and years now, and we are so excited because we are finally making it happen!
Yep, that’s right! Lauren and I are going travelling to Europe together in just a little under six weeks! Lauren will be travelling for a month across France, Greece and Italy and I’ll be joining her for the two-week France/Greece portion of it. While we desperately wanted our younger sister Dimity (and other bestie!) to join us, it just wasn’t possible due to her university commitments. So sad! But it does give us a great excuse to plan a little something together again in the future!
So, the other day, while daydreaming about our trip together, we started chatting about the movies that most inspire us to travel, and the ones we want to watch before we embark on our “Travelling Twins” adventure! I thought I’d share our list, and hopefully add a few to it, if you’ve got any favourites of your own!
1// Chocolat, France
We watched this film together over the weekend and loved it just as much now as we did when we were 17 watching the film for the first time. My obsession with all things French (French culture, French style, French countryside, etc) runs deep, so this film is such a perfect one for me. Plus, there’s lots and lots of chocolate!
2// Breakfast at Tiffany’s: New York
Audrey Hepburn is perfect in this film and through Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I saw New York years and years before I actually saw it. It never fails to make me want to visit again!
3// Under the Tuscan Sun: Italy
Tuscany has been high on my travel wish list for the longest time, and the scenery in this film leaves me without any wonder why!
4// The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: Greece
It’s been years since I’ve seen this movie but I remember loving it so much when I was younger – it has such lovely themes of friendship and travel and adventure that still appeals to me today!
5// The Beach: Thailand
I remember being slightly disturbed by this film when I first saw it, but now I love it. Mainly because I love Thailand. Oh, and Leo.
6// Memoirs of a Geisha: Japan
I’m already wanting to go back to Japan, and I can’t wait to watch Memoirs of a Geisha again to see all the places we visited during our travels.
7// Eat Pray Love: Bali, India, Italy
While I’ve never read the book, I’ve watched the movie countless times, if only for the glimpses of life, culture and food in Bali, India and Italy.
8// Amelie: France
This is actually the only film on this list that I haven’t seen. Given my adoration for all things French, I seriously must rectify that STAT!
9// Midnight in Paris: France
This film showcases all the things I have loved about Paris for more than a decade. I was 14 when I first arrived in Paris on school exchange, and I’m so excited to see Paris again now as an adult. I wonder if I’ll see it any differently?
10// Love Actually: England
This film is an absolute must for me every Christmas, but I don’t let silly things like “it’s a Christmas movie” stop me from watching it year round! What’s better than dreaming of a magical, white Christmas in England anyway?
Lauren and I are planning on having a few movie marathons soon to get through all these before we set off on our travels together in April!
What are your favourite travel-inspiring movies? Do tell! XO
